Demolition work continues at 871 Seventh Avenue, marking the next phase of Extell’s 1,050-foot supertall in Midtown Manhattan. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle, the 71-story tower will feature 130 luxury condominiums, a 156-room hotel, 24,000 square feet of retail, and a 55-space parking garage. Together, these elements will span about 484,000 square feet and replace the former Wellington Hotel at the corner of Seventh Avenue and West 55th Street.

Site Work and Early Design
Today, scaffolding lines the western façade, and crews are actively clearing interiors and removing debris. The former retail tenants have already vacated. Although final renderings have not yet been revealed, early diagrams suggest a glass curtain wall framed by a precise grid of mullions.
The building will rise higher than CitySpire (810 feet), giving Midtown another striking landmark. Moreover, the north-facing side—overlooking Central Park—is expected to include floor-to-ceiling windows for both hotel rooms and condominium units. The uppermost levels will also likely feature corner balconies, creating visual contrast and enhancing views.

Building Layout and Access
The project’s ground-level plan outlines separate entrances for residents and hotel guests, promoting privacy and convenience. In addition, a porte-cochère along West 55th Street will provide direct vehicle access. The structure’s footprint will interlock with the CitySpire podium, ensuring an efficient use of space and smooth pedestrian flow throughout the site.
Transit Connectivity and Upgrades
Extell will also improve the surrounding transit infrastructure. The developer plans to add ADA-accessible elevators and a new staircase at the nearby 50th Street (1 train) station. Furthermore, a new stairwell entrance will connect directly to the 57th Street (N/Q/R/W) subway station, located beneath the site. These upgrades will enhance accessibility and strengthen Midtown’s transportation network.
Development Timeline
Demolition is projected to wrap up by late 2026. Once completed, construction of the new tower will begin, adding another defining feature to the Midtown skyline. With its height, glass design, and strategic location, 871 Seventh Avenue will stand as a symbol of luxury, innovation, and architectural excellence in New York City.
