Demolition is actively progressing at 12 West 57th Street, where a 52-story, 672-foot-tall residential skyscraper designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is set to rise in Midtown Manhattan. Developed by Sheldon Solow of Solow Management Corp., who filed permits in 2019, this towering structure will be a new addition to Billionaires’ Row, positioned between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and spanning West 56th and 57th Streets. The project site includes the former locations of several low- and mid-rise buildings between 10 and 20 West 57th Street.
Recent photographs highlight the demolition progress, with the last two structures adjacent to the Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue now enveloped in scaffolding and construction netting. Crews are diligently working to bring these buildings down to street level. While the progress has been gradual, with only a few floors demolished since the last update in May 2023, there is potential for the remaining work to conclude by year-end. The cleared areas to the west are currently being used as a staging ground for the demolition efforts.
The architectural renderings showcase a striking dark glass façade with a monolithic design. A mid-rise annex, featuring contrasting white paneling, is set back from the base of the skyscraper. The main residential entrance, located on West 57th Street, will be complemented by a small pond and sculpture, while a two-story retail space will be situated directly to the west. It remains unclear if SOM’s original design has been modified since these images were first released.
As of now, the construction and completion date for 12 West 57th Street has not been finalized.
