New York, NY — One of the most heavily trafficked and architecturally significant gateways to Central Park is officially back on display. The Central Park Conservancy, in partnership with the city, has completed a meticulous, multi-year $16 million restoration of Merchant’s Gate, located at the bustling intersection of 59th Street and Columbus Circle, just steps from the 57th Street corridor.
The project seamlessly revives the historic 19th-century vision of park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, providing local residents, visitors, and luxury commercial properties along the park’s southern border with a stunningly refreshed entrance.

Enhanced Accessibility and Pedestrian Flow
Beyond its aesthetic triumphs, the project focused heavily on modernizing pedestrian safety and accessibility. The Conservancy widened pathways and eliminated uneven stone grading to make the gateway fully ADA-accessible. Structural barriers were also optimized to streamline the heavy flow of pedestrians, runners, and cyclists transitioning between Central Park South and the Upper West Side.
