57th Street Report

One of Manhattan’s most recognizable skyscrapers is once again making headlines, this time for the legal dispute surrounding its development.

111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower, is at the center of a longstanding investor lawsuit, with a trial currently scheduled to begin on November 30, 2026.

The proceedings mark another chapter in a years-long dispute involving the financing and ownership of one of Billionaires’ Row’s most distinctive residential towers.

Behind the Development

The legal dispute dates back to the financing of the luxury condominium tower, when investor AmBase Corporation, through an affiliated entity, contributed approximately $65 million in equity to the project.

Following financial difficulties and a restructuring of the development’s loans in 2017, AmBase lost its ownership stake through a disputed foreclosure process.

The investor alleges that parties involved in the project arranged the transaction in a way that unfairly deprived it of its investment. These allegations remain contested and have not been established as findings of wrongdoing.

A New Chapter in Court

In May 2026, the New York Court of Appeals revived one of the investor’s contractual claims, allowing that part of the case to proceed.

According to AmBase’s latest available quarterly filing, the court maintained the November 30, 2026, trial date following a scheduling conference in August.

The upcoming proceedings could mark an important step toward resolving a dispute that has continued for nearly a decade.

Beyond the Skyline

Rising above Billionaires’ Row, Steinway Tower remains one of New York City’s most striking architectural landmarks, combining a contemporary supertall skyscraper with the historic Steinway Hall at its base.

While the building is celebrated for its distinctive silhouette and place in Manhattan’s luxury residential landscape, the ongoing litigation offers a glimpse into the complex financial history behind major New York real estate developments.

As the November trial approaches, attention will turn to the courtroom for the next developments in this longstanding dispute.
